Skater Of The Month - January 2013

Our Skater of the Month for January 2013 is #303 - Cherry Bob-omb

1. How did you get involved in derby?
My parents were interested in roller derby and after watching the movie Whip It they researched some nearby teams. Before I knew it I was one of the Southland Slashers.

2. What is the meaning of your derby name/number?
When I was trying to come up with a name I had a little trouble, but overall I cant remember how Cherry Bomb went through my head. Now that that is my name I like that there is a song called Cherry Bomb, its pretty much my theme song now. As for my number at the time of coming up with my name and number I liked a band called 3Oh!3. They also had a pretty simple and cool hand sign to go with the name of their band. I've never had the chance to use that hand sign but its cool, I was thinking about changing my number though.

3. What is your favorite thing about being a Southland Slasher?
I get to be myself there is the big thing. The girls are really fun too because they treat me like family and encourage me.

4. What have you learned from being in derby?
I've learned to be myself overall, its been a major influence on the way i treat other people as well.

5. What advice do you have for aspiring derby girls?
Don't be afraid. Don't be afraid of falling down, don't be afraid of being too slow, and most importantly don't be afraid of failing. There is no such thing as failing in roller derby. Have fun and be a part of the family and always remember that no matter what there will always be room to improve.

6. What kind of gear do you use?
Right now i use triple eight pads and riedell skates but I'll be getting skates from Bont and hopefully 187 pads.

7. If you could skate anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I'd love to be able to skate in a mall.

8. What are your hopes/goals for your derby future?
I'd like to keep improving myself in strength and speed. After I finally get done with all of my schooling I'll be putting so much effort into improving myself. As for positions I like my place as a jammer and pivot.
